Hey Mark!! Thank you for sharing your process! It's super informative. My question for you is how did you learn to compose these key/pin-up art pieces? Did you begin doing master copies from Struzan, Peak, Rockwell, etc? I'm thinking of sitting down for an entire month (or more) and just doing quick value comps to get a flavor of these cool compositions. What are your tips?

Hi Alex --

Thanks for the kind words. Actually, there are many influences on my work, Alvin, Peak, Rockwell, Sundblom and yes Struzan. Alvin and Struzan I'm honored to know personally and because they - and others - have been so influential in shaping the way entertainment posters are composed in general, its always good to look at what WORKS.

Don't forget, the client is also very influential in the way something is executed and for movie posters and they look for montages composed in the way Drew, Bob Peak, Richard Amsel or David Grove might have worked. I've loved working with montages since the early 70' - so its a compositional structure I'm very comfortable with. I've also studied the techniques of Michelangelo all the way through to Adam Hughes but in the end it was always important for me to find a path that I was comfortable with.

You have some terrific work in your gallery and I wish you well on this exciting road...

I've always felt there is not enough BR art out there. I appreciate you taking the time to comment...

Obvious statement: it appears that you enjoy the films of Harrison Ford, especially late Seventies through Eighties.

Yes I do..!

I guess its partly because I was already out of school when they were released and also because - working for Lucasfilm - I end up painting Solo and Indy a LOT.
